9 Common Types of Sarcoma

Sarcoma is a rare type of cancer that occurs in the connecting tissues of the body. The most common types of sarcoma occur in the bones, fat, blood vessels, muscles, tendons, nerves, and cartilage of the arms and legs. There are more than 50 types of sarcoma and are grouped into two kinds: osteosarcoma or bone sarcoma and soft tissue sarcoma. The following is a list of the nine most common types of sarcoma.

1. Angiosarcoma
This type of sarcoma develops in the cells that form the walls of the blood vessels and is known as hemangiosarcoma. It can also form in the lymph nodes and is called lymphangiosarcoma. It most commonly occurs in the skin, liver, breast, spleen, and the deep tissues of the body. Angiosarcomas that affect the skin are most often detected on the scalp and face. This form of sarcoma has sometimes been seen to occur in parts of the body that have undergone radiation therapy.

2. Adult fibrosarcoma
This is one of the common types of sarcoma that usually affects the fibrous tissue of the legs, trunk, or arms. Although it can affect people of any age, including infants, it is commonly detected in people between the ages of 20 and 60.

3. Epithelioid sarcoma
This starts in the tissues under the skin and mostly affects the forearms, feet, lower legs, and hands. This is mostly diagnosed in teens and young adults.

4. Fibromyxoid sarcoma
Sometimes known as Evans’ tumor, this slow-growing cancer starts as a growth in the arms, legs, especially the thigh or the trunk. This growth is painless. This is one of the common types of sarcoma to affect young and middle-aged adults.

5. Leiomyosarcoma
This form of sarcoma mainly affects the smooth muscle tissue of any part of the body, such as the uterus, arms, or legs. However, it most often starts in the stomach.

6. Rhabdomyosarcomas
This is one of the common types of sarcoma to affect soft tissues and is diagnosed in children.

7. Liposarcomas
Another of the common types of sarcoma that can affect any part of the body. The malignant growths of fat tissue of this type of sarcoma mostly start behind the knee or the back of the abdomen. It is usually diagnosed in adults between the ages of 50 and 65 years.

8. Synovial sarcomas
This type of sarcoma mostly affects children and young adults. It can affect older people too. It develops in the tissues of the joints and tendons. Even though it can affect any part of the body, it most often affects the knees, hip, ankle, and shoulder.

9. Myxofibrosarcomas
Commonly seen in or just under the skin of elderly people, this form of sarcoma is categorized as low-grade. Also, there may be more than one tumor at a time.

Treatment of the various rare and common types of sarcoma depends on the stage, type, and location of the tumor. Discussing your treatment options with your doctor will help formulate a plan.
